Hello, everyone. Thanks so much for joining me as we explore together in our art journals and sketchbooks.
One of my favorite things to do is periodically venture far outside myself as an artist by looking to the works of those who have come before, and trying new experiments to see what resonates with me, and what time spent with their work might teach us right now.
It’s especially poignant when you connect with an artist at a moment in their biography where some of the same problems and patterns you’ve been working with in your own artwork came to fruition in theirs. Hilma Af Klint was, in many ways, a traditional landscape painter who was submerged in abstraction.
I came to art obsessed with abstraction and minimalism, long ago, and now I find myself, in many ways, a traditional landscape painter! This creative session was a wonderful chance to revisit Hilma and go full circle.
I know that the power of her geometry and simplicity will speak to you as you create your response to it.
Let’s try on Hilma’s curiosity about geometry and pattern, form and grid, map and metaphor, and let’s create some gorgeously calming and meditative pages in our art journals. Our pace will be slow and focused, our colors will be elemental and symbolic, and we’ll add a touch of the alchemical magic of gold as our final flourish.
